Wilhelm Raabe School

About the project

The 3-field sports hall, the branch of the “Wilhelm-Raabe-Schule” and the day-care centre, as well as the directly associated open spaces, form a ribbon structure of different and independent building parts. The linear arrangement of the entrances along Meterstraße strengthens the street space and thus the direct connection to the old building of the traditional grammar school. An open space directly in front of the buildings and accompanied by an arcade creates an appropriate arrival point. It protects the diverse, mostly very young users of the new building structure from the weather and from the traffic on Meterstrasse. The ribbon structure strengthens the vertical articulation of the new building. The base area and the protective enclosure of the open spaces are formed by strong vertical wooden slats. 2-3-storey compact building volumes made of yellow-grey brick project over the base and create inviting entrance situations.

  • The design proposal was awarded 3rd place.
